Is this a PPO or a DMO?

Neither. The Careington Care 500 plan offered by Senior Dental is called a dental discount plan, dental savings plan, or dental discount program. It is not insurance.

Here are the differences:

PPO

High Cost, High Savings*
*(until you hit your annual limit)

A PPO, or preferred provider organization, may be the type of plan you had through work in the past. In this type of plan, reduced rates have been negotiated with certain dentists who have agreed to work with the insurance company.

If you go out of network, you still get some reimbursement, but you do not receive the reduced rates.

PPO plans work best for large groups. Individual plans often come with more expensive premiums, and they often have annual maximums of $1,000-$1,500 — which means you could find yourself paying hundreds of dollars each year for a plan that practically can only save you a few hundred dollars when all is said and done. As a point of reference, a full-price crown with accompanying buildup can easily cost $1,500.

Add the fact that you frequently have to wait a year to be eligible for savings on a crown (and that whole time you’re already paying premiums), plus the fact that pre-existing conditions are often excluded, and many seniors find that PPOs aren’t worth the cost.

DMO

(Dental HMO)
Low Cost, Low Savings

With a DMO, you typically do not have as much freedom to choose your dentist. This can be a big problem if you have a bad experience with the dentist you are assigned or if you suddenly have a dental emergency while traveling.

In addition, many DMOs cover few procedures other than routine visits and cleanings.

Dental Discount Plan

Low Cost, High Savings

A dental discount plan, or dental savings plan, allows you to pay a low membership fee and go to any dentist who has agreed to the reduced rates for treatment. You then just pay the lower price to the dentist directly at the time of service.
